Portland mayor announces goal of citywide broadband Internet, ‘a new Forest Avenue’

Redzone Wireless, LLC, a Maine-based wireless Internet service provider (WISP), has received final approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to begin transmission of high speed internet services using the Educational Broadband Service (EBS) Spectrum granted under its long term lease agreement with the University of Maine System.
The FCC awarded a premium EBS Spectrum license for transmission within the range of 2495-2690 MHz to the University of Maine System for the purpose of promoting educational media distribution. The FCC further allowed the University to enter a commercial partnership with Redzone Wireless, LLC to develop a statewide wireless broadband network to benefit the public education system.
This recently announced partnership grants Redzone the exclusive right to operate a high-speed wireless Internet network on Maine’s EBS Spectrum through 2043. Under the terms of the agreement, Redzone will also extend broadband network coverage to University locations in Maine.

This cooperative effort will strengthen our communities and brighten our state’s future.”

Redzone Wireless intends to begin operating a 4G LTE Advanced wireless broadband network on the licensed EBS Spectrum during the first quarter of 2015, and will offer plans throughout Maine that meet the recently revised broadband standards of both the FCC and ConnectME.
Residential & business customers in selected Maine areas will also be able to sign up for broadband service on the new company website in the first quarter at www.redzonewireless.com.
